As Simon Stevens (Chief Exec of NHS England) started to talk tough about responsible food production, marketing and consumption in England, public health issues here in the US seem to be gaining airtime too. Today in San Francisco city officials are voting on whether to force new regulations on labelling of sugary drinks to add a warning that says: “WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay.” If this passes then it will affect billboard and bus stop adverts for sugary drinks and will prevent city funds being spent on sugary drinks. Today’s officials vote comes months after a proposal to introduce a new sugary drink tax was voted down by the public, so it will be exciting to see what happens.
